Image Use & Imagery
A picture paints a thousand words’. The web is a great multi-media resource and image is a large part of that experience. Many times an image is more effective at communicating a message than words. That said, some notes of caution around using images as part of a web site… First, images must be optimally sized for rendering on the web over slow connections such as dial-up. A resolution of 72 pixels per inch is the recommended setting.
While this setting will be satisfactory in the majority of cases, there will still be special applications where greater image detail may be required. In these rare cases the web might not be the suitable medium for such imagery. Another important consideration with images is accessibility. Visually impaired visitors will derive little or no benefit from images. Judicious use of the ‘alt’ tag will improve a visually impaired person’s experience while visiting your site.
